SDES Helps Users Secure Documents on the Net
December 18, 2001

As broadband continues to expand by leaps and bounds, document security becomes all the more important for users who frequently send their documents on the Net. Fuji Xerox has taken an important step forward as an applications service provider by introducing a document security system, Secure Document Exchange Services (SDES), which is based on Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) to increase the security of digital communications. Fuji Xerox launched the services in November.

To prevent digital documents from being altered or tampered with during transmission as well as to verify the correct sender and receiver, SDES comprises two main services: 1/ SDES digital certificate issuing service, which is similar to providing users with a digital passport that certifies them to engage in secure digital communications through PKI encryption software over the Web, and 2/ SDES document distribution service that allows users to store files in a locker for secure digital data distribution.

Fuji Xerox 's service is unique in that it can easily customize its services to meet specific user needs. Typically, the customization of PKI vendor products is very costly, however with the introduction of SDES, Fuji Xerox can adopt the PKI key using its own policies and services to customize the product for different users.

Summary of Services

1. [SDES digital certification issuing service]:

Issues users a digital certificate (from its certification authority) which is tamper-proof and non-forgeable, enabling users to engage in secure digital communications via a Secure Socket Layer.*

*SSL is an Internet Standard for secure communications between Web browser clients and Web servers.

2. [SDES document distribution service]:

Enables users to store documents in a locker for secure access and distribution. Users must have received a PKI-based digital certificate (that includes the user's public key) prior to accessing their locker to engage in secure electronic communications via the SSL.

Fuji Xerox has gained significant know-how in this area after it began testing the service in 2000 and offering this service to its customers and partner companies over the Net. SDES is applicable to various industries, for example in the finance industry for secure electronic transactions or in the manufacturing industry for secure document distribution related procurement and distribution over the Internet.

Suggested price (tax excluded)
The price of SDES is determined by the number of users to receive a digital certificate (i.e. the number of public keys that are distributed)
