Access to digital broadband content has now been made
easier with Fuji Xerox's Multimedia Document Service System
that allows a user the right to access and purchase digital content
via its multifunction machine, the DocuColor 1250 CP. Sales began
in December 2001.
Multimedia Document Service System, which comprises
hardware (the DocuColor 1250 CP) and service software for content
delivery, allows users to download and print content on demand at
schools, universities, hotels, airports, and other public facilities.
Moreover, Fuji Xerox will expand the service into the private sector
in partnership with content providers.
Fuji Xerox plans to expand Multimedia Document Service
System into portal development. For example, the system can be
packaged as an online store for users to access their favorite information
channel including content on business and lifestyles. The service
aims at increasing the efficiency of digital content distribution.
User services
[1. Content Service]
Users can access a content server via the Internet at high speed.
The content is encrypted to protect the author's content rights, and
requires that the user purchase an access ticket to download the content.
The user fee (includes print fee and content delivery fee) is collected
by a coin kit attached to the machine.
The content printed is recorded on a print log. Fuji Xerox receives
a fee from the vendor (the establishment where the service is installed),
which covers printing and content, and then makes a payment to the content
provider.
[2. Private Print Service (optional)]
The private print service enables users to print content over the
Internet (for authorized individuals with access tickets) .
The content is encapsulated so that it is less prone to hacking over
the Internet.
The vendor (establishment to adopt the service), for example a university,
can collect user fees from individual students who access the system
using the attached coin kit.
About content providers
In content delivery and content management services, Fuji
Xerox will consign services to Cross Head K.K for content encryption, thumbnail
content guides, portal site and content storage and maintenance. In other
services, content providers will join Fuji Xerox to provide general content
services. For example, Japan Computer Graphics Co., Ltd and Shobunsha will
team with Fuji Xerox to provide public information about sports facilities,
hospitals, schools, tourist information and bus timetables, as well as various
maps including civil defense maps and road maps.
