Fuji Xerox announced its commitment to engage in The Global Compact initiative advocated by the United Nations, endorsing its assertion with a report presented to The Global Compact Office. Fuji Xerox is the seventh company from Japan to participate in the initiative, and only the second such company to present a report.
The Global Compact seeks to advance responsible corporate citizenship by having major companies from around the world comply with nine internationally recognized principles related to human rights, labor standards and the environment. United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan first proposed The Global Compact in an address to The World Economic Forum held in Davos, Switzerland, in January 1999.
Fuji Xerox has developed its business throughout Japan, China and the Asia-Pacific region, endorsing an "excellent company" concept based on the ideals of "strong, kind and interesting," in which economic, social and humanistic values are upheld. This idea is positioned at the core of Fuji Xerox's management concepts. Fuji Xerox asserted its support of the nine principles purported by The Global Compact and decided to take part in the program to further fulfill its social responsibility.
Further, Fuji Xerox presented a report declaring its intentions to The Global Compact Office, which has been released on The Global Compact website (http://www.unglobalcompact.org). Fuji Xerox was the second company in Japan to present such a report, behind Kikkoman Corporation.
The report concerned Fuji Xerox's efforts to be an environmentally conscious company. With plans in place to create further reports related to human rights and labor standards, Fuji Xerox intends to strengthen its corporate structure, while increasing awareness and encouraging activities based on the nine principles of The Global Compact.
As of November 19, 2002, approximately 600 companies from all regions of the world were engaged in The Global Compact, including eight from Japan.
