NEC and Fuji Xerox Team Up to Provide Streaming Solutions

June 19, 2003

NEC Corporation and Fuji Xerox Co., Ltd. have teamed up to offer streaming solutions for the distribution of video images and audio material via the Internet. The new service offering commenced on June 10, 2003.

The two companies offer comprehensive streaming services from the construction of web sites that allow audio and visual search of streaming contents to the management of stored or logged audio-visual contents and copyright protection. Both companies aim to expand their streaming-oriented services through this endeavor, including e-learning and knowledge-sharing services via video imagery for corporations together with information services that use audio and visual imagery for customers and others in local government, education and service industries.

The following outlines the details of the business services:

1. Joint development of registration and distribution system for streaming contents

The two companies have jointly developed MediaDEPO with StreamPro. This service combines the functions of Fuji Xerox's media handling software, MediaDEPO Server Ver. 2.0, which allows the automatic registration of contents on streaming web sites, voice search, predictive search by way of the slider bar and scene search through summarized "manga" display, and, NEC's streaming management and distribution system, StreamPro, which enables the efficient management of logged audio-visual material as well as provides copyright protection via a "one-time," or exclusive, URL.

Previously, each process operation, such as registering video data on the web site, converting images to streaming format, adding search functions, managing logged audio-visual contents and establishing copyright protection through an exclusive URL, required separate systems that respectively took a considerable number of hours to create.

MediaDEPO with StreamPro automatically and efficiently integrates these complex procedures into one system, reducing the hours needed for web site management as well as running costs.

2. Promote cooperative marketing and sales activities.

The two companies established a 10-member task team to make proposals to customers in order to promote MediaDEPO with StreamPro. The team will improve and expand the number of proposals made through mutual introduction and sharing of information regarding target companies.

Moreover, marketing and sales activities will be boosted by holding joint seminars and exhibitions in addition to conducting collaborative advertising. The services system's package starts from 3,400,000 yen, and the two companies target to offer 100 systems in three years.

In recent years, activities related to video and audio streaming have expanded along with the spread of broadband. In addition to using streaming contents in place of conventional still images to raise the level of efficiency in information services, related applications have also increased to include e-learning for corporations and information-sharing services such as lectures on management. The current endeavor aims to meet market needs in all of these areas.
