Fuji Xerox of Shenzhen Ltd., a manufacturing site of Fuji Xerox Co., Ltd., has achieved "zero waste" by reusing waste and parts produced in the course of its manufacturing activities.
This is the first time for one of Fuji Xerox's manufacturing sites in China to achieve "zero waste," representing a quantum leap forward in its environmental conservation activities not only in Japan, but also in China.
*: Fuji Xerox defines "zero waste" as a waste landfill rate of 0.5 percent (by weight) or lower, and the achievement is subject to maintaining a recycling rate of 99.5 percent or higher for three consecutive months.
Fuji Xerox and its affiliates have established environmental management aiming at "the realization of a sustainable society" by promoting energy conservation, effective use of resources, and the reuse of waste.
Fuji Xerox of Shenzhen, which develops and manufactures low-end laser printers, digital copy/multifunction machines, started full-fledged implementation of its environmental programs by formulating a "zero waste draft action plan" in July 2003 and by establishing a zero emission implementation section within the company.
As an initial step, it implemented a waste separation program, and then tackled projects to reduce waste generated from its daily business activities as well as to utilize domestic waste for generating power, which had been an issue. To assist those efforts, infrastructures such as waste storage facilities and collection boxes were set up, and at the same time, greater focus was placed on employee training with the aim of familiarizing them with the concept of "zero waste" and raising their awareness.
In order to make the most use of resources generated from manufacturing processes, the disassembly operation of used Fuji Xerox products has been commissioned to recycling partners, who sort disassembled parts and accessories into eight categories of materials to facilitate recycling. Other efforts aimed at realizing "zero waste" include sending environmental personnel to Fuji Xerox in August 2004 for one month of training and adopting the best practices of leading companies in the field of environmental management.
As a result of these efforts, the recycling rate of 37.48 percent in fiscal 2002 improved to as much as 94.49 percent in fiscal 2003, and in September 2004 it achieved a recycling rate of 99.5 percent. After maintaining that level for three consecutive months, Fuji Xerox of Shenzhen declared that it had achieved "zero waste."
Fuji Xerox's environmental policy targeting "zero waste" had already yielded high accolades and outstanding results at its Ebina and Takematsu Centers, followed by the success at its Chinese plant. Under its proactive environmental strategy, Fuji Xerox aims for growth both in sales and manufacturing while promoting stringent management of energy consumption and efficient recycling propelled by the move toward energy and resource conservation.
Eco-Friendly Activities at Fuji Xerox and its Affiliates
Fuji Xerox and its affiliates promote the attainment of ISO14001 EMS certification as a fundamental environmental strategy. As of December 2004, the number of ISO14001-certified sites totaled 53 in Japan and 21 in other countries/regions, including R&D facilities, manufacturing plants and sales organizations. Fuji Xerox will continuously strive to realize a sustainable society by commanding a global-leading level of environmental management.
