Fuji Xerox And Three Partners
Start Shipping Woodchips
From Own Plantation In New Zealand
To Be Used For Copy/Printers Paper, Aiming At "Self-Sufficiency"
Of Paper Materials For Sustainable Supply
March 10, 2005
Tokyo, March 10, 2005 - Fuji Xerox Co., Ltd., in collaboration with
its affiliate Fuji Xerox Office Supply Co., Ltd., ITOCHU Corporation
and Oji Paper Co., Ltd., today shipped the first cargo of woodchips
to be used for copy/printers paper that Fuji Xerox will supply starting
from early summer this year, from Bluff Port, New Zealand, for the Oji
Paper's factory in Miyazaki Prefecture, Japan. The 12,000 tons of woodchips
in the cargo were produced from eucalyptus trees planted and grown since
1992 by Southland Plantation Forest Company of New Zealand Limited (SPFL)Note,
a plantation company partly owned by Fuji Xerox and Fuji Xerox Office
Supply, which is based in Invercargill at the southern tip of the country's
South Island.
| Note |
SPFL was established
by Oji Paper and ITOCHU in 1992, and received a capital injection
from Fuji Xerox and Fuji Xerox Office Supply in 1996. |
The woodchips obtained forest management certification from the Forest
Stewardship Council (FSC)Note for the first
time in New Zealand. At Oji Paper's Nichinan Factory in Miyazaki, the
woodchips will be processed into FSC-certified paper for copy machines
and printers bearing the Fuji Xerox brand for use in Japan.
| Note |
FSC is a nongovernmental
organization (NGO) established for the purpose of promoting sustainable
forest management. Its scope of certification ranges from forests,
including plantation designed to prevent the destruction of the ecological
system, to wood products, chips and paper products produced from woods
felled in those forests. |
Fuji Xerox and Fuji Xerox Office Supply, which recognize that helping
prevent the depletion of national resources is one of their critical
responsibilities, are committed to providing copy/printer paper to customers
in a sustainable manner. To this end, while aiming to maintain the ratio
of recycled pulp above 50 percent, the companies have been implementing
the "Eco-Conscious Pulp Plan" to cover the rest of the necessary
supply with plantation pulp and certified pulp by 2010.
Fuji Xerox and Fuji Xerox Office Supply invested in SPFL in 1996 to
promote the "self-sufficiency of paper materials" for copy/printer
paper supply, being conscious of Corporate Societal Responsibility (CSR).

SPFL, established in 1992, started with planting eucalyptus on 520 hectares of land and has now extended that to approximately 10,000 hectares of eucalyptus plantation (larger than the land inside of Tokyo's JR Yamanote line, which is approximately 7,000 hectares). It is now possible to harvest those eucalyptus trees planted in 1992. On the harvested land, eucalyptus will be planted again for gradual expansion of the harvest so that production of around 180,000 tons a year may be maintained from 2010.
Fuji Xerox aims at realizing a sustainable society on the basis of its ecology and safety vision, "Fuji Xerox and its affiliates deploy our most ecology-conscious activities in all aspects of our business. We will strive to offer customers products, services and information that are safe and kind to the environment, and thereby make a world-class contribution to the environmental conservation efforts of individuals and society."
At the same time, starting on December 1, 2004, Fuji Xerox and all of its affiliates implemented the "Environment, health and safety requirements for paper procurement," which are applicable to all kinds of paper procured not only in Japan, but also in Southeast Asia, China and Oceania. The requirements basically comprise six key provisions, ranging from "compliance with all applicable laws and regulations" to "sustainable forest management such as acquisition of third-party certifications including those from the FSC."
