Suzuka Fuji Xerox Eliminates All Greenhouse Gases
Except CO2 From All Production Processes
April 14, 2005
| Suzuka Fuji Xerox Co., Ltd., an affiliate
of Fuji Xerox Co., Ltd., has achieved its goal of completely
eliminating the use of hydrofluorocarbon (HFC)note
from all of its production processes. As a result, no HFCs
or greenhouse gases (GHG) except for CO2
are used in any of the production processes at Fuji Xerox
or its affiliates. |
| The total GHG emission of Fuji Xerox and
its affiliates as of fiscal 1990 was 145 kilotons of CO2
equivalent (kt CO2) with the other
five GHGs accounting for 25 kt CO2,
or approximately 17 percent of total emissions. |
| In response, conversion to alternative
substances and other measures were taken to reduce emissions,
achieving 111 kt CO2, or 23 percent
reduction compared to 1990, by fiscal 2003. The use of the
five gases was also reduced, leaving the use of HFC in Suzuka
Fuji Xerox and other sites as the last source of the five-gas
emission (approximately 1.5 kt CO2,
or 2 percent of the total emission) by Fuji Xerox and its
affiliates. Recently, the use of HFC was totally abolished
when Suzuka Fuji Xerox introduced an alternative method in
its production process. |
| Previously, Suzuka Fuji Xerox used HFC
in the cleaning process of optical parts for copy machines
and printers. By developing a new steam cleaning method using
alcohol solvents (a method to create a clean, foreign-material
free environment to wash and dry parts), which includes propriety
technology, the company achieved total elimination of HFC.
This cleaning system also realizes a cost reduction of 2 million
yen. |
| The reduction of HFC use for air conditioners
and other products (0.2 kt CO2
in 2003) is in progress. |
|
note
|
One of the GHGs for which reduction is required
in the Kyoto Protocol. The greenhouse effect of HFC is considered
to be 1,300 times higher than CO2. Other GHGs subject to reduction
in the Kyoto Protocol are carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4),
nitrogen dioxide (N2O), perfluorocarbon (PFC, a CFC substitute),
and sulfur hexafluoride (SF6). |
| Fuji Xerox and its affiliates proactively
conduct activities to prevent global warmingspecifically
for CO2 reductionthrough
all aspects of its corporate activities, both domestically
and abroad, toward the realization of a sustainable society.
