Japan's First Search Service Integrating Patent Information
with Science and Technology Literature Information

New option to DocuPat patent information and utilization support service
September 20, 2005

Fuji Xerox Co., Ltd. has developed Japan's first search service to integrate patent information with that of science and technology literature informationNote. Roughly 20 million science and technology entries supplied by Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST) have been added to Fuji Xerox's DocuPat Private Server Service patent information and utilization support service as a new option. The revamped service begins on September 21.

The DocuPat Private Server Service covers approximately 18 million patent publications in Japan and the United States, stored on a shared server operated by Fuji Xerox. Users conduct searches using this database and then store their findings as well as affixed information in a private server, managed and operated by Fuji Xerox.

The new service allows searches of both patent information and science and technology literature information via a uniform user interface. Combined with various features facilitating more effective investigation, the service realizes an environment in which a general technical staff member (not just specialists in patent searches) can make use of patents and science and technology literature information in an integrated fashion.

Further, search results from both fields can be stored together for effective sharing. Customers can confer their own classifications to the patent and science and technology literature information in accordance with their own technology system, so information can be stored in a manner that best fits their needs. The information utilization spectrum is enhanced because data can be more easily shared among interested parties by adding memos evaluating literature of note. It is also possible to create an integrated patent and science and technology literature map to aid in the comprehension of macroscopic trends such as new technologies developed by other companies or organizations.

Information (title, author, material etc.) on where to obtain scientific papers, reviews and articles published in scientific journals, research reports, preprints and conference minutes from more than 50 countries worldwide, including Japan; also has a synopsis with a Japanese excerpt.

Background to Offering the New Service
In a corporation, knowing competitors and other corporations' technical trends is effective in gaining competitiveness. Fuji Xerox has offered the Web-based patent information search system DocuPat since 2001 to offer general technical staff an environment to conduct highly specific investigations.

However, since it takes about one and a half years for patents to be disclosed from the application filing date, patent information alone cannot meet users' needs fully to search for the latest information. The new service adds approximately 20 million science and technology literature information to approximately 18 million patent information previously provided, thereby offering users an environment to investigate Japan and overseas' companies and research institutes' latest technical information.

Unlike corporations, universities and research institutes are advanced in utilizing science and technology literature information; however, recently there are growing needs in connecting their knowledge with patents. Fuji Xerox offers the new service that integrates patents and science/technology literature information, to not only corporations, but also universities, research institutes and others to meet their various investigation needs.
