Fuji Xerox Eco-Manufacturing Obtains
ISO14001 Certification

Further enhances integrated recycling system in Asia-Pacific region
October 6, 2005

Fuji Xerox Eco-Manufacturing Co. Ltd. (FXEM), a base for Fuji Xerox's integrated recycling system in the Asia-Pacific region, has obtained environment management system ISO14001 certification.

As part of its corporate societal responsibility (CSR) efforts, Fuji Xerox has been promoting an international-resources-recycling network called the Asia-Pacific integrated recycling system, under the company's product recycling policy that aims at achieving "zero-landfill."

FXEM collects used products, including copy machines/printers and cartridges, from nine countries/regionsNote in the Asia-Pacific region and completely disassembles and classifies the parts into a total of 64 categories, such as iron, aluminum, lenses, glass and copper, for recycling.

Note
Australia, New Zealand, South Korea, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Hong Kong and Thailand

FXEM completed the creation of an environment management system within a short period of time with the aim of early acquisition of ISO14001. This aim was realized just six months after it started preparations in March 2005, which was also soon after launching operations in December 2004.

The British Standards Institutions (BSi), which is based in Britain and has offices all over the world, was in charge of examining FXEM's application for ISO certification. A preliminary examination began in September 2005, followed by a series of full-scale examinations. The outcome was that our environment management system was rated highly, and ISO14001-2004 certification was granted on September 26.

In August 2000, Fuji Xerox became the first Japanese company to realize "zero-landfill" for recycled products. And as a step forward, Fuji Xerox, as a global company, launched an integrated recycling system at FXEM in December 2004, aimed at diffusing the system-similar to the one introduced in Japan-in the Asia-Pacific region.

The integrated system has a number of distinctive characteristics compared with the employment of separate systems in each country, as it (1) was founded in cooperation with and trust among the nine Asia-Pacific countries and regions; (2) facilitates collection and disassembly, and detoxification of hazardous materials of used Fuji Xerox products from different countries without the need for any intermediaries; (3) aims for "zero-landfill" by steadily improving the recycling rate; (4) supports the fair and equal allocation of costs among local sales subsidiaries; (5) boosts productivity by creating a pool of used products at an integrated recycling center; and (6) helps to reduce waste (from approx. 25 percent to zero) and creates a new industrial system in Thailand.

The resources, which are completely disassembled and classified into 64 categories at FXEM, are processed into useful materials (99.6% recycled) to achieve the "zero-landfill" target in cooperation with Mitsui & Co. (Thailand), as well as 12 recycling partners in Thailand and other Asian countries, including four companies in Japan. FXEM is capable of handling 20,000 to 30,000 used products and 500,000 cartridges a year.
