Fuji Xerox Taiwan’s Taoyuan Plant Achieves “Zero Waste”
Reduced 82 tons of Waste in FY2005 to Zero
| Tokyo, March 26, 2007 – The Taoyuan Plant of Fuji Xerox Taiwan Corporation, a production center for Fuji Xerox Co., Ltd., recently achieved “zero wasteNote 1” through the reutilization of waste material, including corrugated board, plastics, general waste and toner, generated by production activities at the plant, and other measures. |
| Note 1: |
Fuji Xerox defines "zero waste" as a waste landfill rate of 0.5 percent (by weight) or lower, and the achievement is subject to maintaining a recycling rate of 99.5 percent or higher for three consecutive months. |
In April 2004, the Taoyuan Plant, which mainly produces toners and toner cartridges, formed a task force within its Quality Assurance Unit to reduce waste generated from end-of-life products to zero and promote recycling. The plant thus began to sort its waste and set about reducing the amount of solid waste sent to landfill sites through such initiatives as reforming awareness, making the “zero waste” concept familiar to all employees. Currently, end-of-life toner is used as an auxiliary material by paint manufacturers, and general waste is sent to reuse facilities where it undergoes thermal recycling used in power generation.
As a result of these measures to promote reuse and recycling of waste, the Taoyuan Plant managed to divert the 82 tons of waste buried as landfill or incinerated in FY2005 to recycling, achieving “zero waste”.
The Taoyuan Plant has had environmental protection policies in place for all its toner production processes for some time. In 1985, it began retrieving dust discharged from toner production and using environmental protection systems to control waste and emissions. In 2000, the plant adopted an environmental management system, and in June 2001 it obtained ISO 14001 certification.
Additionally, in order to improve environmental management and enhance competitiveness, the plant has introduced an occupational health and safety management system (OHSAS 18001)Note 2 through which it aims to further raise occupational health and safety levels and improve corporate governance. |
| Note 2: |
OHSAS stands for “Occupational Health and Safety Assessment Systems”, and OHSAS 18001 refers to a set of standards for occupational health and safety management systems. These standards require organizations to identify occupational health and safety risks faced by employees at work and to plan and implement measures to counter those risks, the aim being to reduce the possibility of problems occurring. |
| Fuji Xerox and its affiliates, aiming to realize a sustainable society, are practicing environmental management through their promotion of energy conservation, effective utilization of resources, and reuse of waste. |
