Fuji Xerox Board Director and Executive Advisor Toshio Arima Appointed to United Nations Global Compact Board Member

Representing Japanese Companies to Help Deliver Global Sustainability

TOKYO, July 24, 2007 — Toshio Arima, former president and current board director and executive advisor of Fuji Xerox Co., Ltd., was appointed to the United Nations Global Compact Board by the United Nation’s Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon on July 6, 2007.

The Global Compact was declared in 2000 by the United Nations (UN) with the aim of bringing companies together to help solve some of the world’s issues concerning human rights, labor, the environment and corruption, and approximately 4,000 organizations from all regions of the world have signed the agreement, including 53 in Japan.

The Global Compact Board was inaugurated in 2006 to provide ongoing strategic and policy advice for the initiative as a whole and to make recommendations to the Global Compact Office, its participants and other stakeholders, in order to drive further continuity and development of the initiative.

The Board is composed of 20 leaders; 10 from business, four from international labor groups, four from NPOs, one UN-related representative and one from the Foundation for the Global Compact. Arima, one of the business representatives, is Japan’s sole member on the Board.

Arima earned his nomination from the governing committee of the Global Compact Japan Network for his management experience at Fuji Xerox’s affiliate in the United States, as well as his aggressive efforts to promote CSR activities at Fuji Xerox, notably the development of the International Resource Recycling System and ethical sourcing.

The appointment was announced during the second Global Compact Leaders Summit, which was held at the UN Office Geneva, Switzerland, on July 5 and 6, 2007.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon called Arima’s name as one of the new Board members at the closing ceremony of the event attended by all participants. Following the appointment, words of support flowed from Korean, Sri Lankan and other Asian business representatives, expressing how proud they were, while encouraging Arima to expand Asian CSR activities into Global Compact initiatives worldwide.

The Global Compact Leaders Summit is the largest gathering of the UN Global Compact and is staged once every three years. Chaired by the UN Secretary-General, the Summit included around 1,000 representatives from business, NPOs and heads of various UN bodies.

The Summit got underway with briefings on mega-trends from McKinsey & Company and Goldman Sachs, who stated that companies contributing to the resolution of environmental and social problems would gain higher profits and outperform the competition.

Then, as one of the six business representatives, Arima gave a presentation to commence the group discussion during which he expressed his agreement of these trends. He then went on to discuss the importance of pursuing innovation to balance social needs with corporate profits, citing examples of Fuji Xerox’s Integrated Resource Recycling System promoting parts reuse and ethical sourcing activities advanced with partner companies. He also called for cooperation from civil society and the government to give appropriate recognition to companies practicing CSR activities proactively.
