Fuji Xerox's International Resource Recycling System Recycles 9,000 Tons of Resources in Three Years of Operation

Recovers and Recycles 55,000 Units of Used Products

TOKYO, August 22, 2007 – In the third year of operation, the international resource recycling system in the Asia-Pacific region that Fuji Xerox Co., Ltd. established in December 2004 has recycled approximately 9,000 tons of resources. To date, the company has recovered around 55,000 units of used products, then dismantled and classified them into 70 categories, including iron, aluminium, lens, glass and copper, for recycling. The recycling rate of the used products recovered is 99.2 percent.

Fuji Xerox Eco-Manufacturing Co., Ltd. (FXEM) in Thailand handles operation of the recycling system, working in coordination with 12 recycling partner companies in Thailand and Asia, and four in Japan. The used products and cartridges are shipped from Fuji Xerox's sales companies in the Asia-Pacific region to the recycling site in Thailand where they are disassembled and separated before being delivered to the recycling companies. A tracking system ensures that there is no illegal dumping following the whole recycling process.

Strong partnerships with relevant authorities and companies throughout the Asia-Pacific region are integral to maintain the recycling system, and FXEM has been striving to enhance its credibility by implementing environmental management including conserving energy at the site, in consequence of acquiring ISO14001 certification in September 2005, in the second year the system was up and running. The recycling system has received critical acclaim in Asia, and FXEM gave a presentation on the system at the United Nation's Regional Meeting of Global Compact Focal Points of Asia held in April 2007. Fuji Xerox aims to further reduce environmental impact through the system so that it is recognized as a model recycling system in the Asia-Pacific region.

The integrated recycling system has a number of distinctive characteristics compared with the employment of separate systems in each country, as it (1) is rooted in cooperation and trust of nine Asia-Pacific countries and regions; (2) facilitates recovery and disassembly of used Fuji Xerox products over the borders without the need for any intermediaries; (3) aims for "zero landfill" by steadily improving recycling rate; (4) minimizes environmental impact by recovering and separating components that include hazardous materials; (5) supports the internationally fair and equal allocation of costs among local sales companies; (6) boosts productivity through economies-of-scale; and (7) helps Thailand reduce waste in the country (reducing the landfill rate of each used product from an estimated 25 percent to zero), while creating a new industrial system.

As part of corporate societal responsibility (CSR) efforts, Fuji Xerox formulated a product recycling policy that promotes resource recycling aimed at "zero landfill" of used products, being the first in Japan to achieve the goal in August 2000.

As a global company, to fulfil responsibility in reducing environmental impact in the Asia-Pacific region as well, Fuji Xerox launched the international resource recycling system, under which the company's cartridges and used products such as copy machines and printers are recovered from nine Asia-Pacific countries and regionNote1, thoroughly disassembled, sorted and recycled. Boasting an equivalent level of quality to the system in Japan, full-fledged operation of the international resource recycling system commenced in December 2004.
