Fuji Xerox's Environmental Friendly Returnable Container
Wins Technology Prize in Logistics Awards
Recycling-Oriented Delivery System Reduces CO2 Emissions in
Distribution and Container Production and
Conserves Resources
TOKYO, October 29, 2007 – Fuji Xerox Co., Ltd. won the Technology Prize at the 24th Logistics Awards sponsored by the Japan Institute of Logistics SystemsNote for its returnable container co-developed with Starway Co., Ltd. This was the first time Fuji Xerox has received the award.
The prize was given to the development of the returnable container and implementation of a recycling-oriented delivery system to recover the containers. Fuji Xerox switched from cardboard boxes, which were nonreusable, to the returnable containers that can be recovered and recycled, in order to reduce carbon dioxide emissions during their distribution and production, as well as to conserve resources. In addition, the company established a recovery system for the empty containers, resulting in reduction of environmental burden while slashing overall logistics costs.
Since introducing the system at the end of August 2006, Fuji Xerox has reduced carbon dioxide emissions during distribution and container production by 91 tons as well as the amount of new packaging materials by 145 tons. Also, the company introduced two new returnable containers of different sizes in October 2007, making a total of three sizes now in use, replacing 81 percent of cardboard boxes to the returnable containers, up seven percent.
The containers, made of 100 percent recycled paper, can be used more than 100 times. They are then dissolved to return to the original material, making them environmentally friendly. The containers can be compactly folded so that nine of them fit into one container for easy recovery utilizing existing delivery service, making the system versatile. These factors culminated in receiving the prize.
The Japan Institute of Logistics Systems bestows the awards once a year for outstanding achievements in the area of logistics. The awards consist of four prizes: Grand Prize, Encouragement Prize, Environment Prize and Technology Prize.
