PrintXchange Software
February 17, 1999
Fuji Xerox has launched PrintXchange, new output management software,
that supports multiple platforms in a client-server environment and increases
the efficiency of network printing. Sales began January 27.
PrintXchange* facilitates a networked printing environment
that improves productivity, while providing fine-tuned management capabilities.
In particular, PrintXchange enables a flexible, fast and cost-efficient
network-printing environment that is suitable for customers using multiplatforms
(e.g. UNIX, Windows OS) and multivendors, as well as those seeking enterprise-resource
planning (ERP) solutions.
In addition, PrintXchange adopts ISO10175 (Document Printing Application)
open architecture. By incorporating a developer's kit in each system,
users can establish a customized printing environment according to their
needs by increasing the management functions or linking up to other client
application software.
Special Features Include:
- Enterprise-wide access to networked printers-Users can print, cancel
a print job, and receive notification of printer status.
- Notification of malfunctions-A mail window pops up when a malfunction
or error occurs.
- Access Restriction-System administrator can restrict access to users
of a particular job.
- Custom presets for printer-Users can preset print commands for specific
documents.
- Printer load balancing-Print jobs are managed efficiently by directing
them to the nearest available printer.
- Demand reprint-Users can specify the period for PrintXchange to preserve
the job in the print spool for convenient reprints.
- Print log-detailed record of print jobs
- Multiple document printing in one job-Users can print multiple documents
in a single print job.
- Compatibility with other printing systems-Using inbound gateway, users
can send print jobs from other printing systems to the PrintXchange
system.
- Developer's kit- (optional kit will be available in the future) to
develop client-based application using API** (Application
Programming Interface).
*PrintXchange was jointly developed by Fuji Xerox and Xerox,
as well as Sun Microsystems, Inc., and Digital Equipment Corporation (recently
acquired by Compaq). Xerox released the English version of PrintXchange
in August 1998.
**Application Programming Interface allows users of one printing
system to connect with software applications compatible with other systems.
