Digital Camera Photo Printing System Using
Xerography Method Wins
Technology Award from the Imaging Society of Japan
Fuji Photo Film and Fuji Xerox Collaboration Receives Ultimate Recognition
| TOKYO, June 7, 2006 – At a ceremony held on June 6, 2006,
The Imaging Society of Japan awarded its Technology Award for 2005 to the digital
camera photo printing system using the Xerography method jointly developed by Fuji
Photo Film Co., Ltd. and Fuji Xerox Co., Ltd. |
| This system, built into a color multifunction device, was developed
as the use of digital cameras became more widespread to allow customers to quickly
and easily print out their digital photos. The service was started at convenience
stores in September 2004. |
| Technologies featured in the Xerography method have been refined
and advanced over time to ensure greater print speed and enhanced image quality,
which has resulted in print quality approaching that of offset printing. However,
enhancing the surface quality to realize the photo-unique gloss and smooth characteristic
has remained a major challenge. |
| To overcome this problem, Fuji Xerox developed technology for
“belt fusing/melting adhesion and cooling before stripping.” This involves
pressing the toner onto the photo paper at a high temperature and pressure to flatten
it before it is adhered to the fusing belt, rapidly cooled and the paper stripped
at the optimum temperature. This system helps achieve a glossy, smooth print surface
that is equal to silver-based photography. Fuji Xerox successfully applied this technology
to its color multifunction device with a high performance engine, resulting in a
new high-value-added service without compromising the copy or print functions. |
| Fuji Photo Film and Fuji Xerox jointly developed “FUJIFILM
XEROGRAPHIC PHOTOPAPER” exclusively for this system by coating it with a special
resin that has excellent toner compatibility. Higher quality photo images that are
highly durable without color deterioration are achieved with pigmented toner. |
| The synergy between Fuji Photo Film’s advanced image processing
technology from its digital mini labs and high image quality photo paper, and Fuji
Xerox’s color copy machine/multifunction device technology, has culminated
in the successful application of the world’s first photo printing system using
the Xerography method. |
| The Imaging Society of Japan Technology Award recognizes digital
photography technology, Non-Impact Printing (NIP) technology and peripheral technology
that display outstanding originality and exceptional applicability. The prize is
limited to technology that has been on the market for more than one but less than
three years. |
| Fuji Photo Film and Fuji Xerox will strive to provide new products
and services that leverage superlative technologies and developmental competencies
inherent in both companies. |
