Fuji Xerox’s “beat” Service Incorporates
New Intrusion Prevention System (IPS) as Standard

Enhances Security Level at Small and
Medium-Sized Enterprises

TOKYO, July 1, 2008 – Fuji Xerox Co., Ltd. has incorporated the Intrusion Prevention System (IPS)Note 1 as a new function for its secure network outsourcing “beat” services for small to medium-sized enterprises. IPS can detect and block unauthorized communication, including Denial-of-Service (DoS) attacks and Trojan horses. Fuji Xerox will roll out IPS sequentially from July 1, 2008.

IPS will be incorporated together with total screening type firewall, anti-virus and anti-spyware that are already supplied in the “beat” services, thereby strengthening measures to combat strategic threats to security that have been difficult to protect against until now.

Since IPS is relatively costly and time-consuming to manage in terms of operations and maintenance in particular, its introduction at companies has been lagging. IPS will be bundled as standard for “beat/basicNote 2” and “beat/branchNote 3” services, making it possible to use the function for a low monthly fee. Furthermore, the all-round management of IPS, from operation to maintenance, can be outsourced, which reduces burden on the administrator.

Fuji Xerox’s secure network outsourcing “beat” services will continue to provide advanced security measures befitting the times in order to help customers expand their businesses by promoting IT.

Features of IPS for “beat” Services
1. IPS, which is stored in beat-boxNote 4, inspects contents and activityNote 5 of packet communications, and blocks all communication that is deemed unauthorized. The function also blocks communication through applications by Winny or messenger software that may cause information leakage or virus infection, even if it is not illicit.
2. Automatic updates of the signatureNote 4 help to defend against unauthorized communication and applications that can occur one after the other, eliminating the need for maintenance by an IT administrator.

Note 1 Intrusion Prevention System: A system to protect against unauthorized entry to a specific network or computer. Offensive patterns are committed to memory in advance, and when an attempt at unauthorized entry is detected, the communication is blocked or other defensive mechanisms are initiated in real-time, notification is sent to an administrator and a record is filed in a log.
Note 2 beat/basic service: The outsourcing service that provides various security measures.
Note 3 beat/brunch service: Center-controlled managed Internet VPN service.
Note 4 beat-box: An appliance server set up between the Internet and LAN at the contract holder’s office.
Note 5 activity: Refers to whether or not the communication complies with regulations.
Note 6 signature: patterns of characteristics of unauthorized communication.
